Apartment living: Green spaces designed for wellbeing

22 October 2024

At Sekisui House, we place a strong emphasis on community and its connection to the surrounding environment. Our role is to create homes that seamlessly integrate into a broader community, blending harmoniously with the local environment.

Australia provides the most beautiful backdrops, landscapes and native flora and fauna, allowing us to establish outdoor spaces that promote a deeper connection to nature, eliciting access to a better quality of life for our residents.

Green spaces are an essential part of living, so we ensure our apartments, developments and masterplanned communities are centered around this. Our homes aim to offer comfort, security and peace of mind for residents while maintaining harmony with the environment and its surroundings. Central to this belief is the Japanese philosophy of Satoyama, meaning ‘ribbons of green’.

Satoyama is based on the idea that both humans and nature can exist alongside and benefit from one another when properly managed — achieving a harmonious interaction between natural and man-made environments.

This core philosophy is at the heart of everything we do, from designing spaces for community engagement and recreation to creating the perfect ‘backyard’ for residents to connect with nature.

Melrose Park

Melrose Park has been thoughtfully designed to promote health and wellbeing through exclusive access to private communal gardens, featuring wild play areas for children and families, lush open green spaces and BBQ areas. The integration of nature within the Melrose Park community provides residents access to approximately 4,000m2 of private gardens that act as their own backyard.

With apartment features already promoting self-care and wellness, including air and water filters, sound insulation and a designated wellness room for residents, the integration of green spaces surrounding Melrose Park further elevates the living experience, enabling a deep connection to the great outdoors.

Sanctuary

Nestled in the riverside suburb of Wentworth Point, Sanctuary provides serene forever homes with incredible waterfront views. Residents can enjoy the luxury of sunlit spaces within their homes and the convenience of fresh, outdoor spaces right at their doorstep.

To further the benefits of these outdoor spaces, Sanctuary is currently upgrading part of the existing River Walk into a brand-new Foreshore Park. This upgrade will allow residents and the Wentworth Point community to experience state-of-the-art recreational facilities, playgrounds and enhanced green spaces, providing spaces where people can connect with one another and embrace nature.

“Access to green spaces was a significant factor in our decision to purchase at Sanctuary” says Sanctuary purchaser Dennis Meneses Guda.

“Being surrounded by nature provides a sense of peace and relaxation, which is essential for our overall well-being. Having these spaces nearby gives me the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities, recharge after a long day, and feel connected to the environment.”

The Orchards

Inspired by the orange orchards in Norwest, The Orchards is where life blooms. The most significant residential master planned community to be introduced to Australia in over a decade, The Orchards embodies the philosophy of Satoyama. Boasting luxurious living directly connected to nature, walking paths, parks and greenspaces have been intertwined into every aspect of The Orchards masterplan, allowing residents to experience the timelessness of nature in their everyday lives.

Trevor Thompson, a now retired resident at The Orchards, shares how the local green spaces including the community garden helps him stay busy and connect with nature, so close to home. “The space is beautiful and green, which helped our initial decision to purchase”, says Trevor. “I put my hand up to coordinate and oversee the maintenance of our gardens- as that was my job traditionally for the past 20 years.

“I now spend at least one day a week working in the garden. Access to these beautiful gardens is very important for my overall lifestyle and well-being now that I have retired”.

West Village

In Brisbane’s West End, we have created a vibrant mixed-use community. The thoughtful design of the 2.6ha West Village masterplan ensures residents, commercial tenants, and retail shoppers are seamlessly connected with heritage architecture and lushly landscaped green spaces. This multi-award-winning community reimagines urban living, and creates the perfect harmony between open green spaces and urban progression, with a 99/100 walk score that further enhances its appeal.

At Sekisui House, we believe in the importance of Satoyama in restoring the relationship between humans and nature to create a sustainable future. Our homes are created holistically, providing indoor retreats to envy, while allowing residents access to green spaces that elevate the living experience, providing opportunities to connect with oneself, nature and the community.
